Best Time for Badal Umrah: Any Month Works, Some Carry More

The best time for Badal Umrah is the time you can arrange it. Umrah has no fixed season, so a representative can perform it for you or your loved one in any month. Some periods carry extra virtue, mainly Ramadan, the months of Hajj, then Rajab and Sha’ban. Others, especially the weeks around Hajj, are shaped by Saudi permit rules. If the person is ill, elderly or has passed away, do not wait for a perfect month. Choose the earliest sincere option and, if you wish, a more virtuous time when it is realistic.
TL;DR
- Umrah, including Umrah on behalf of another, can be performed at any time of year, so no month is required for it to be valid.
- The most recommended times are Ramadan, then the months of Hajj, then Rajab and Sha’ban.
- Around Hajj, Saudi authorities pause Nusuk Umrah permits, so dates in that window are decided by the permit system.
- For a person who is chronically ill or elderly, or for a deceased parent, acting sooner is better than waiting for a particular month.
- Within a day, the quietest hours at the Grand Mosque are late at night and mid-morning to mid-afternoon.

Is there a time when Badal Umrah is not valid?
No. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah states that Umrah may be performed at any time throughout the year. Unlike Hajj, which is tied to specific days in Dhul Hijjah, Umrah has no specific time. What matters is that the pilgrim enters the state of Ihram at the proper Miqat, or at the point parallel to it on the way.
This applies to Badal Umrah as well. A representative performs the same rites you would: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i and the shaving or trimming of the hair. The intention is made on behalf of the person being served. If you want the full ruling and the steps, our guide on what Badal Umrah is covers them.
One point from the scholars is worth knowing. There is no set limit on the gap between one Umrah and the next. Umrah is prescribed at all times, and whenever it is easy to perform is better. In plain terms: ease matters more than the calendar.
The months scholars describe as most virtuous
While every month is open, Dar al-Ifta in Egypt explains that the most recommended times are Ramadan first, then the months of Hajj, then Rajab and Sha’ban. That gives you a simple order of preference:
- Ramadan, the month most associated with extra reward for Umrah.
- The months of Hajj (Shawwal, Dhul Qi’dah and Dhul Hijjah), with the practical limits described below.
- Rajab and Sha’ban, the months before Ramadan.
- Any other month, which remains fully valid.
A preference is not a requirement. Families often feel pressure to wait until Ramadan, especially for a parent who has passed. There is no validity reason to do so. The Saudi Ministry makes clear that Umrah can be performed at any time of year, so nobody needs to hold a sincere intention back for a better date.
Badal Umrah in Ramadan
Ramadan is the time many families ask for first. The well-known narration in Bukhari and Muslim says Umrah in Ramadan is like Hajj in reward. IslamQA notes that the majority view applies this virtue to everyone who performs Umrah in Ramadan, not only to the woman first addressed in the narration.
It helps to understand what the phrase means. The same source explains that “equivalent to Hajj” refers to the amount of reward, not the type of worship. Umrah in Ramadan does not replace the obligatory Hajj for a person who still owes it. If you are arranging Hajj for someone, that is a separate matter, and our guide on Umrah versus Hajj explains the difference clearly.
Practical points for Ramadan
Ramadan is the busiest season for requests, so plan early. A few things to keep in mind:
- Book well before the month begins. Requests rise sharply, and an early booking gives you more choice of dates.
- The last ten nights need the longest lead. Many families ask for these nights, and permits are issued by day and time through Nusuk. We explain how this works in our guide to choosing a Badal Umrah date by Nusuk.
- Expect a heavier crowd. Your representative will still complete every rite, but the timing of the day may shift to fit the permit.
If Ramadan is too far away for your situation, remember that an Umrah done now is not lesser in validity.
Badal Umrah around Hajj season
The months of Hajj are listed among the virtuous times, but this is where Saudi rules matter most. According to Gulf News, Saudi authorities suspended Nusuk Umrah permit issuance from the start of Dhul Qi’dah until the 14th of Dhul Hijjah during the 2026 Hajj season, and allowed only Hajj-permit holders into Makkah and the holy sites in that period.
What that means for you:
- Umrah is still valid in the months of Hajj, but permit availability can push the date earlier or later than you expect.
- If you request a date in Dhul Qi’dah or early Dhul Hijjah, it may be moved until permits reopen.
- Dates before the pause (Shawwal) and after it (late Dhul Hijjah onward) are usually simpler to arrange.
We have written two guides on this: Badal Umrah in Dhul Hijjah and Umrah during Hajj season. Both explain how a date can shift by weeks and how to plan around it.
Days some jurists dislike for Umrah
A second consideration is religious rather than administrative. Dar al-Ifta in Egypt records that some Hanafi jurists, and a report from Imam Ahmad, consider Umrah disliked on the Day of Arafah, the Day of Sacrifice and the three days of Tashriq for those who are not performing Hajj, although the Umrah remains valid. Since those days also fall inside the Saudi permit pause, choosing a date outside them avoids the question entirely.
The Saudi Umrah season and your date
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah publishes a calendar for each Umrah season. For the 1448 AH season, it announced that visa issuance and entry begin on 31 May 2026, and Nusuk permits for Makkah from 1 June, with the season closing in March and April 2027. These dates change every year, so treat the pattern as the guide: the season opens after Hajj and runs through the following spring. Always check the Ministry’s current announcement for the exact schedule.

This matters little to you as a client, because your representative handles the visa and the permit. But it explains why a request made right after Hajj may be arranged quickly, while one made just before Hajj can wait.
Which time of day is best?
If you are asking about the hour rather than the month, Saudi guidance is clear. The Ministry’s Umrah guide advises choosing Nusuk appointment times with less crowding, and says permits are issued by the selected day and time. Gulf News reports the pattern at the Grand Mosque:
| Time of day | Crowd level |
|---|---|
| 10pm to 4am | Low |
| 5am to 8am | Moderate |
| 9am to 4pm | Low |
| 5pm to 9pm | Busiest |
These figures come from Saudi guidance on the quietest hours. Careful timing, they say, helps worshippers move more smoothly through the Mataf and the Masaa.
For your family, the practical benefit is calm. A representative who performs the rites in a quieter hour can do so with focus and without being rushed. That is one reason we encourage clients to leave the hour to us rather than request one.
Choosing a time when the person is ill, elderly or deceased
This is the question behind most searches for the best time. The answer changes with the situation.
For a deceased parent or relative
Islamweb explains that Umrah for a deceased person frees them of the obligation, and its reward reaches them. There is no waiting period. Many families choose a meaningful date, such as the first Ramadan after a loss or an anniversary, but nothing stops you from arranging it sooner. The earlier, the better for your own peace of mind.
For a living person who cannot travel
The same source says Umrah on behalf of a living person benefits them only if they are chronically incapable of performing it themselves, and requires their permission. Jordan’s Iftaa Department likewise states that delegation is permitted for a person unable to perform Umrah because of illness or old age, that the incapacitated person’s permission should be sought, and that the representative should have already performed Hajj and Umrah for themselves.
For a living, elderly parent, time matters in a very human way. Arrange it while they can still hear the news and make du’a for it. If your family has questions about the ruling, speak with a qualified imam or scholar you trust.

Choosing the representative
IslamQA says it is permissible to pay someone to perform Umrah for a deceased person or a living person who is too old or chronically ill, and advises choosing someone righteous and knowledgeable. It also notes that the deputy should perform the Umrah themselves, or tell the appointing person if they will appoint someone else. That is why transparency about who performs it is part of what we promise.
A quick guide: which time suits which need
| Your situation | Suggested timing |
|---|---|
| Loved one is gravely ill or very elderly | As soon as you can, in any month |
| Parent or relative has passed away | Soon, or on a meaningful date such as Ramadan |
| You want the most virtuous month | Ramadan, booked early |
| You want a calm, simple arrangement | Rajab, Sha’ban or the months after Hajj |
| You are marking a gift or occasion | Any month, with a date that suits the occasion |
Our perspective on timing
We hear the same worry again and again: “Have we missed the right month?” Our answer is gentle and firm. Umrah is open all year, and a sincere request made today is better than a perfect request postponed.
We believe the best date is the one that fits your family’s need, and then, where possible, one of the virtuous times: Ramadan, the months of Hajj, Rajab or Sha’ban. Where Saudi permits decide the calendar, we tell you plainly and plan around it, so no one is surprised.
Our work is designed to give you peace of mind: a trusted representative, a service carried out according to Islamic law and verified by qualified imams, real-time updates, and proof in the form of photos, videos and a certificate. For you. For your loved ones. For their forgiveness.

The packages differ in speed and features, and each includes proof of completion. If you are ready, you can book your Umrah now and tell us the period you have in mind.

If your need is Hajj rather than Umrah, we also offer Hajj Badal, Ifraad at $1,500 and Hajj Badal, Tamattu’ with Umrah and Qurbani at $2,500.
FAQ
Can I do Badal Umrah outside Ramadan?
Yes. Umrah can be performed at any time of year, and Badal Umrah follows the same rule. Ramadan carries extra virtue, but the Umrah is complete and valid in every other month. If your family cannot wait, do not.
Does Ramadan Umrah on behalf of someone count as Hajj for them?
No. The phrase refers to the amount of reward, not to the type of worship. It does not fulfil the obligatory Hajj for a person who still owes it. For that, Hajj on behalf of someone is arranged separately.
Can Badal Umrah be done during Hajj season?
It is valid in the months of Hajj, but Saudi authorities pause Nusuk Umrah permits from the start of Dhul Qi’dah until the 14th of Dhul Hijjah. A date in that window may be moved. Our guide to Umrah during Hajj season explains how to plan.
How soon should I book for a deceased parent?
There is no waiting period, so you can book as soon as you are ready. Many families choose a meaningful time, such as Ramadan, but earlier is also well. Our guide on whether Umrah for others is allowed sets out the rulings.
What time of day is best for the rites?
Saudi guidance reports the lowest crowds from 10pm to 4am and from 9am to 4pm, and the busiest period from 5pm to 9pm. Your representative follows the permit time and chooses calmer slots where possible.
